Solving Communication Issues with the New Brain Implant! A collaborative effort of neuroscientists, brain surgeons, and engineers at Duke University has led to the development of a speech prosthesis that can translate a person’s brain signals into what they are trying to say. This technology, specifically designed for individuals who suffer from speech disorders due to neurological issues or have lost their ability to speak directly, has the potential to eliminate speech-related problems.

Professor Gregory Cogan, a neurology professor at Duke University and the team leader, expressed that “Many patients are affected by debilitating motor disorders like ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or locked-in syndrome, which weaken their speech abilities. Therefore, this invention is revolutionary.”

As for the implant itself, it’s about the size of a postage stamp. Professor Jonathan Vivent, also from the same university, oversaw the production of these implants. He embedded 256 microscopic brain sensors into a flexible, medically suitable plastic piece the size of a postage stamp. Subsequently, a quick test was conducted on four patients who had undergone brain surgery within a limited timeframe.

The results were highly successful. The sensors capture and decipher speech signals transmitted through neurons in the brain. The decoded information is then transferred to a separate computer and read aloud. As a result, individuals with the implant can communicate by merely thinking, without the need to speak.
