Yesterday, reports emerged of a cooling leak in Russia’s Nauka module, adding to the growing list of issues surrounding space activities in recent years. The International Space Station (ISS) has once again made headlines with a concerning announcement. Russian cosmonauts are now facing a third leak in their section. Here are the details:
It has been revealed that one of the two radiators in space has leaked ammonia. Russia has encountered several challenges in its space endeavors this year, and today’s news tells us that the Nauka module on the International Space Station (ISS) has experienced a new leak due to faulty hardware.
In a blog post, it was stated that a spare radiator mounted outside the Nauka module began leaking cooling fluid at 13:00 on October 9. The leak came to light when flight controllers detected an alarm in the Nauka module on the same day.
NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli visually confirmed that one of the two radiators in the module leaked ammonia into space. Fortunately, this leak is not as critical as the one that hit the Russian Soyuz capsule at the end of 2022. NASA assured that the crew is not in any danger following the incident.
Operations are currently continuing as usual, and Roscosmos stated that engineers are investigating the cause of the leak. The incident follows a recent cooling fluid leak from a Russian spacecraft parked at the station, with minor meteoroids being suggested as the culprits for these leaks.
